Recently I had a gas smell in the car and after some detective work discovered that the solder joint - filler neck to tank had a crack. Removed tank (and while it was out I cleaned out crud with pea gravel and water) unsoldered, cleaned and retinned mating sufaces and resoldered the filler neck. The most important part of this the fit-up. I placed the tank back in the car and after centering the filler neck in the hole in the body, I tacked it in place, then removed the whole unit and completed the soldering out of the car. This leaking filler neck issue seems to be a common failure and after 40 years and I would do this to any car I got that looks like it might have been bumped in that area. An off center filler neck in the body can indicate the potential for leaking due to failed solder joint.
