There are several aftermarket conversion kits like Crane and Pertronix.

You can also use the stock 1975 240 distributor, which came from Volvo as an electronic Hall effects type.

In either case, you might need to have the distributor rebuilt to get optimum performance due to worn or broken advance mechanism and/or worn shaft bushings.

There is a company manufacturing a brand new electronic distributor that is completely electronic and has no mechanical advance mechanism. The advance is done electronically.

I have installed 2 of these distributors in customers cars in the last 6 month and so far no problems.

The new distributors are not cheap, but they offer a lot of features, like cylinder balancing, no moving parts except for the center shaft, at least 16 preset electronically controled advance curves for different Volvo engines combinations, an auto coil shut off if the distributor is not turning to keep the coil from overheating. It also uses a Bosch cap and rotor, BUT IT IS EXPENSIVE.

Only time will tell if it is a good investment. But as Bosch stopped offering rebuilt distributors over 2 years ago, this new distributor seems to me to be a good option, especially if you are doing a B18 to B20 coversion.

They also make a version of that can provide the signal needed for the D-jet fuel injection system.
