88 240 battery terminals: pos on which side?

dude...if the terminals are on the wrong side of the battery....turn the battery around. If there is any confusion about which cable is pos and which is neg....the pos will go to the starter and the neg to a ground...as in the engine block of frame of the car. just about any "spec" battery will work in the old bricks so long as the amperage is sufficient...I have a 700amp in mine.
