There's no contact. We're talking crazy high voltages so there's a little arc, and that's what wears the cap and rotor down. If you're clumsy like me, accidentally hitting the alternator's hot terminal with the wrench when removing your throttle body will show you how spark alone can wear metal surfaces. ;-)
Figure out where the leak is coming from and check your PCV system. Lots of info in the FAQ about replacing dizzy seals.
