Had this problem with my 1990 740. The inhibitor switch (neutral safety switch)replacement fixed it. There are apparently contacts in the switch which are affected by heat coming back through the tranny tunnel, or bad wire connections. Check the connections, or replace the unit (under $50). You remove the center console around the shift lever to access the switch.
