I wrestled with the device last weekend that I believe is what Ken references. I had purchased a 1994 944T project car that the owner had not been able to get the key out of for two years- they just left it in the ignition and locked the doors.
In that car removing the instrument cluster revealed the cable coming into the switch assembly. There was a detent on the cable accessed through the metal sleeve. Pushing on the the detent and pulling out on the cable released it. This allowed the switch to go all the way to the OFF/LOCK position and I could remove the key.
With that device disconnected I still have in insert the key and turn it to ON as well as step on the brake pedal to get it out of park.
However I am able to turn the car off and remove the key with the shifter in any position. I assume the cable was to prevent removing the key unless the selector was in Park. I am willing to accept that risk in exchange for any easy fix on being able to remove the key.
