Odd Starter Question 700

I have an 86 740 turbo diesel.
A little history:
The previous owner installed an aftermarket starter and promptly chewed some teeth off of the flywheel.
I bought it, had the flywheel changed and have been running it for a few months.
Had some starting issue one day and all of a sudden just the whir of the starter.
I immediately assume I just ruined another flywheel.
Get the starter off and hand turn the engine all of the way around, no missing teeth?
Test the starter and it is good.
The autozone people tell me that if my battery was low, which it was after much cranking, that the starter may spin but not puch out to engage.
With joy I head home to reinstall the starter and charge my batery.
As I am installing I notice that it doesnt fit perfectly flush with the engine, the starter body touches the engine and that seems to prop it out just a bit on the inside.

Being that the starter has two bolts I flip it upside down and it fits nice and snug.

I now have it and wired but have yet to turn it over because I wanted to ask this question:

Is it ok to have the starter mounted in this way?

To give you an idea of what it looks like:
When I got the car, the starter wires were easily accessible from the passenger side underneath the car, flipping it means that this section is now blocked from sight buy the main starter body.

Like i said, fits great now.
So should I try and fire it up or am I asking for trouble?

THanks
