Motor Blower not functioning 200 1991

Hi,

I would appreciate some help/advice with a recent problem. Last Tuesday my wife was driving the 240 Brick, it was about -20 C. and snowing. The heater fan was working perfecting fine and has been since the car was purchased in 2003. Anyhow, while the fan was going, my wife accidently turned the AC switch on and within a few seconds the fan stopped working and there was a faint smell of burning. When I checked the car, the AC switch was still on (although the light on the console was on) but the AC compressor was not activated and all 4 positions of the fan motor were non-functional. Not a good time of the season for the heater fan to go!

I checked the fuse and it appeared fine but changed it anyway with a new one which did not resolve the problem. I drove the car around to see whether, despite the fan motor not working, heat was coming from the vents, which it was, therefore I gather the heater core works fine.

Could it be that turning the AC on caused a short with the fan motor running which in the process fried the motor and/or resistor/relay as well as the relay for the AC (as the AC no longer goes on)? I have never tried this combination as I always turn the fan motor off before turning the AC on.

I have done a search and know what a PITA it is to change the blower motor which I am hoping isn't the problem, although this is likely wishful thinking.

Is it probable that the motor and resistor need to be changed? If I were to change the resistor only, do I still need to remove the fan motor housing or can it be changed without doing this? Also, I'm a little confused as to the location of the resistor after reading many prior posts. Some say that it is located close to the fan motor while others indicate it is behind the glove box (perhaps I'm just getting things wrong). I have checked FCP Groton's web and know what the resistor looks like but I cannot find it (unless it is hiding directly behind the fan motor). I have also read that there is a blower relay in addition to the resistor but again I can't see it anywhere and the Bentley manual does not mention it. Is it the case that this relay is behind the glove box while the resistor is behind the blower motor?

Thanks for any help you can provide.
