As I expected.... my 'known good' fuel pump was more along the lines of 'no good'. I'm wondering if perhaps it had water in it that froze in the past two months, breaking the diaphragm. Maybe I'll take it apart for inspection.
Furthermore, I realized I saw air bubbles coming from around the lid of my old pump when I tried to blow backwards through it, thus allowing it to suck air. I took the cover off, put some sealant around the gasket, cleaned the screen in there, and all seems good. Car runs again.
I will procure another pump to have as a spare, and keep it in the car... at least for a while.
thanks again.. sometimes coincidental problems are just too hard to believe, even though I pretty much knew that to be the case...
