Thanks for looking at the EMRA photos, most of them were taken by me. I'm very proud of EMRA's photo gallery--more than most clubs publish. If you look at the June '07 Time Trial at Pocono Raceway you'll see my 144 in front of a Porsche (temporarily). If you are sloppy like me there will be some oil spill/drips when you remove the piston/needle assembly--have a container to hold the old oil and a shop rag to wipe up drips. Remove the damper piston and lay it on the rag. Remove the 3 screws and wiggle the dome clockwise/counterclockwise to loosen it from the carb body and then lift it straight off and set aside. Now you can grasp the top of the piston assembly and lift it straight up with the needle attached. I flip it over to drain the oil and to see the needle mounting better. You'll want to install fresh oil anyway, the same type in both dampers--there is no end to arguements about what kind of oil is best to use--it is seasonal sensitive--so heavier in the summer, thinner in the winter--final choice is completely personal. The needles are often stuck in their bore so after loosening the set screw you may have to resort to a tool (pliers-cushion and rotate) but try it with your fingers first. The needles will bend if abused. Look for flat spots and/or scratches along the needles and look straight down into the jet--if the bore is worn oblong it's usually noticeable. The marking of the needle type is on the shank of the needle.
