Odometer Quit! How to fix 700 1991

I didn't find any gears per se in my 1990 740 speedo to fix so I snagged an instument bucket from ebay for $50 and swapped it out. Quick fix.
I've heard theres a bad cap or chip that goes south, thats beyond me.
My whole speedo died, your might be fixable yet.
I've heard "don't reset it whilst the car is moving".
The speedo is japanese made and thought to be a weak link in volvo's.
