Never mind... the nut was located in a far better position than I originally thought, easily accessed from the interior. I first estimated was it was under the roll cage foot visible in the photo, so we thought we would have to go through the bottom. But after some careful measurement, it just took 4 quick slices of the floorpan with a cutoff wheel and there it was. Obviously, we'll be welding the nut in place before we pull the bolt all the way out.
As an aside, I was pleasantly surprised to see absolutely zero rust inside the exposed channel. This despite evidence of rust repairs in the spare tire wells and rear inner fenders. (The car grew up in the Pittsburg, PA area.)
