Scott,
Yup I agree with you about the trouble lights. My 240 had the same problem as yours recently one day on my way to work. I made it there, but on the way home the car died. I wasn't sure what the problem was either. I knew that the car definitely had a problem, but it was odd that the alternator light wans't the only thing illuminating. My trouble ended up being worn out alternator brushes and I installed a new voltage regulator assembly (that already had new brushes in it) and that fixed everything.
I also agree that it's lame that people around here are criticizing you. Life is too short people. Face it, the Volvo 240 isn't a perfect car. Add to it that all of them are 15+ years old, and we're gonna have some troubles. Sure, they are durrable and solid and generally decently engineered and usually easy enough to work on. There's no reason people here need to criticize other Volvo owners out there who are frustrated with their cars and who are looking for a little help and sympathy. The Brickboard can be a great place of information and assistance. The Brickboard can also be a place where people try to feel superior to others and for some strange reason, they get the courage to be overly criticial and judgemental. I don't get it?
Best wishes to all and may your 240's continue rolling down the road!!!!
