does the timing belt make a 'chirping' sound before it fails?

Check tensioner and idler pulleys on the timing belt. I just fixed a 960 after the tensioner bearing failed and I've got to believe that it gave plenty of warning (noise) before it went, but the previous owner ignored it and paid the price.
