The part you mention about the starter is true, I am sure.
I am also probably fortunate that this did not happen to me, as when I was trying to crank the car - after putting on the new heater hose and valve - it would spin normally at times - like it was going to crank, and then almost at once it was like the motor bogged down ...like there was a lot of compression keeping it from turning.
This was what you mentioned, I would bet - that it triggered the spark way too early, causing what I experienced.
Sound right?
