What it is doing to warrant a gasket change

Hi,

You'd better convince yourself (forget me!) that you're really on the right road!

Do a pressure test on the cooling system and look for any external leaks. If the pressure drops to zero and you can't find any, have an assistant start the engine while you look for white smoke at the tailpipe.

I'd be focused on finding an external leak, as you have no symptoms yet of a blown head gasket besides missing coolant.

As an aid for finding leaks, you can also add fluorescent dye to the cooling system, then use a blacklight at night and look all around the engine and inside the cabin. As a final check, a third party oil analysis would confirm coolant in the engine oil.
