I've tried every trick I've seen posted. I used to save the newspaper bags. Unlike using a condom, the filter's oil comes out at the top as you're screwing it off. Maybe once I got it to work, but just haven't mastered the art, and have resigned myself to spending more time than is fair cleaning up the mount and crossmember. Nowadays I stuff an absorbent rag between the mount and the filter.

Here's a photo of a high-low headlamp relay, but I don't know if it still applies, as old as it is...
