I was not trying to unsolder the braid from the brush, but I can see how I may have led you to think that. I was trying to release it from the back of the assembly. Yup, knew about the tension spring in there also.

I never even thought of filing it off and drilling it out. Sounds like the way to go instead of trying to unsolder. I'll give it a shot over the weekend.

Not enough patience to try it after work at night!
Fortunately I have another car to use, so no pressure to get it done.
