Fuel Tank problem 1800 1971

My '71 1800E has been sitting for years with various problems. Recently overhauled the engine and now the fuel tank will not allow the recirculated fuel to enter the tank. I've removed the hoses which connect to the tank and the fitting for the recirc. fuel seems to be plugged. And I do mean plugged. I have tried to open it with compressed air, a really stiff wire etc. No luck. I don't get it. Anybody encounter this problem before? I can't figure it. Thanks, Mike
