With the car on jackstands I started it and reved the engine quite high. At the upper limits of the RPM's I could hear metallic contact- but only at the extreme upper speed.
I removed the "cover" from in front of the flexplate. I found the points on the heads of the four bolts that attach it to the torque converter to show fresh scraping marks.
The aluminum cover itself showed numerous impact points with "something".

Nothing fell out of the area. There is not much room to visually check things out.
I replaced the rear main seal in this car about 1000 miles ago. I had the seal carrier out to install the seal in it and then replaced it- not my normal procedure; I usually pry out the seal and install a new one with the carrier remaining in place.
All of the flexplate to torque converter bolts are in place and tight.
I am wondering if perhaps I had one of the bolts back out that holds the seal carrier in place? If so where is it? Since it still makes some kind of contact at high RPM's it must still be in there somewhere. And why at just high speed? Flexing of some sort?
So rather than having to replace the turbo it may be that I will have to remove the transmission to see what is going on.
