George, I did a crossmember for a car that did the east africa safari using 1/2 UNF bolts, but it was a lot of work to get it all together, and I was not comfortable with the larger hole in the upper shaft or the fine thread in tension.

I've found a couple of sites that sell grade 8 bolts, so that problem seems to be solved, Still looking for some crossmember dimensions
