Howdy Derek,
After 50 miles with the new coil, I believe the old coil has been the weak sister in the ignition system all along. I have had several intermittent problems for which I could never find THE reason.
The carbs would occasionally "load up" at idle. Meaning, the car would flood out if I didn't tap the throttle while waiting for a traffic light to change. This would come and go with no rhyme or reason. Last evening and this morning, for the first time in memory, the car sat and idled perfectly.
Another problem that I could not explain may have been erased as well. I will need some more miles before I can say for sure. At lightly loaded cruise, say 50 mph on the flat, the power delivery would sometimes be very harsh. The best description I can conjure is a hammering power delivery. It felt like a weak cylinder. But, it would happen for several miles, or several dozen miles and then go away. I checked compression, adjusted valves, changed plugs and wires, and scratched my head. I should have swapped the coil. But $30 to troubleshoot with parts is alien to my modus operandi.
I haven't measured the new coil. I will when I get home at the end of the week. I too am interested to know what this coil reads on the primary side.
