Replacing a Starter 200 1988

Really an easy job, at least for me it was.

Take off the neg lead of the battery. Pull off the yellow blue and big red wires.

Jack up the front nice and high and jack stand it up in the air.

Bottom bolt is a breeze, you can get it with a wrench or a socket.

For the top bolt (used this six times on four cars and it worked every time) I take a short 6 pnt 3/8 (Craftsman) socket, put that on a 3/8 swivel, a 12 inch 3/8 extension, a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter, a 12 inch 1/2 extension, all connected to a nice big 1/2 socket handle. You start behind the transmission fill tube and guide it up and work in on the bolt. When you have it on there firmly extend it out and give is a good strong lefty loosey crank. Maybe I am lucky, but that has worked every single time, may have been a grunt or two but it comes loose. Saturday morning this past weekend as a matter of fact at a pup and Sunday afternoon in the garage.

Leave the bolts in, pull off the old one, guide the new one into place and line it up. Start the top with a righty tighty twist, start the bottom one, and then tighten to spec.

Connect your wires, watch for the ballast resistor contact (got me once) and you should be good to go.

I give it a 3 for difficulty and a 2.5 for time.

Regards,

Paul
