Now that I've actually looked it up, I'm a bit confused. Here's the way the Volvo manuals lay it out:
My Volvo shop manual for the B18B/D says there were type 1, type 2 and type 3 B18B's, as well as type 1, type 2 and type 3 B18D's. The horsepower ratings on these six engines were 100, 108, 115, 90, 95, and 100 respectively. All these engines had 2 carbs, but with a variety of camshafts (marked 'A', 'B', or 'C') and compression ratios (8.5, 8.7, 9.5 and 10.0), we come up with the various hp ratings. FWIW, the only one of these six engines I don't remember seeing in the US would be the 95 hp version B18D.
And BTW, according to the manuals, the 90 hp (type 1) B18D had an 'A' cam, while the rest of the B18D's (types 2 and 3) used the 'B' cam. As near as I can tell, the 108 hp 1800S would have been the first B18 to use the 'C' camshaft.
Further, there would appear to have been B18A types '1' and '2'. There was a 75 hp version with single carb and 'A' cam, but also one with 85 hp, still using the 'A' camshaft. The only specification difference appears to be a small compression ratio bump.
Oh, my! :-)
