rattling heat shield on manifold pipe - what is the purpose? 700

It supposedly protects a fire from starting from heat emminating off your exhaust if say you park over dry leaves, etc. When mine started rattling(which it seems they all inevitably do) I simply removed it. No problems at all. Then again I park on regular paved streets with no fire hazard underneath me.
