Those #2721 bulbs are a pain to find:

IPD has them for $1.00 ea

I know exactly what you mean about the shift indicator lamp. Its a patience building exercise. Small fingers and plenty of time help. I am sure you could fit those #2721 lamps into those holders as you suggested. Sure beats $6.xx a piece. I may just try that with mine when I notice one is burned out.
