IMHO the key (no pun intended) to solving the problem of breaking off keys in the ignition switch is to find the nickle steel key blanks as opposed to the ultra soft and easily broken chrome-brass ones.
Fortunately for me, I live in a moderately civilized city of some size (Kansas City, MO), and there is at least one bona-fide locksmith that I have become a fan of. He managed to locate on his rack of 50,000 key blanks, several "Taylor V77" blanks that are up to the stress of the good old Volvo ignition switch/coil combination that resides in my 544.
Since moving to the "Steel" key, I have yet to notice any degree of twisting in the business end of the key. Best part? $1.90 each, cut to fit!!!
