thanks for the suggestion -- definitely a possibility. I was able to start the car (after wiggling some connectors around the ballast resistor and power stage, but probably randomly) but I've never seen it so unhappy: vibration when idling in "D", vibration and low power on acceleration, apparent coolant loss (snow on the ground is useful that way!). It appears the battery was a red herring!
