Self centering is caused by positive caster, which is not adjustable on a Volvo. Having said that, I believe that manual steering cars have different ball joints than powered steering models. There is some offset in the ball joint plate which is different.
If ball joints were replaced you should check that.
Otherwise as suggested you should put the car on some easy turn surface,(ice?or ?), then have someone turn the wheel and listen for grinding or feel for binding from the upper strut bearings.
