Engine cut-out and a litany of other problems 700 2000

Hi bricksters-

I have a 1990 740GL wagon with a B230 engine. Sometimes, after warming up, the engine will act as if the fuel pump has cut off; the engine stays on, but the tach fluctuates wildly and the car stops moving. My gunning the engine doesn't help - the only thing that gets me going again is to turn off the car, and restart it - this will be good for another 1 or 2 blocks until the same problem reoccurs. Eventually the car will snap out of it and keep going. Last summer I cleaned the flame trap, fuel injectors, and replaced the fuel pressure unit. I don't know if this was a cause of the above problem or a coincidence.

Next issue - my ex mechanic had told me over the years that the diagnostic codes meant that I had to replace the air mass meter and throttle switch (which he then "replaced." However, I understand that I have a Regina system, and there is no air mass meter. If this is the case, why am I getting these diagnostic codes?

Finally, I suspect that Midas Muffler really screwed up my oxygen sensor when they replaced parts of the exhaust system - my mileage dropped to 11 mpg. Should I automatically replace the oxygen sensor or could there be another cause?

Thanks in advance for all advice.
