Long time ago nothing but Volvo.Now only Mann filters.
I remove filler cap,remove drain plug,when that is at a drip,remove filter.
One paper towel is enough. Filling the filter(it all soaks in) I believe is crucial in preventing dry start wear=long engine life.If I do not preload the filter the oil pressure light stays on much longer than a regular startup
Fortunately I can plan for the oil changes on cold engines, no soggy motor mounts for me.
