odd electrical spark

I was getting ready to hook up my battery charger to an '89 240 that has an intermittent dead battery problem (that I haven't had a chance to troubleshoot) and something that seems impossible occured: I took the positive cable off of the post and the clamp touched the metal cover of the high/low headlight relay with a small spark.

Is that some kind of clue as to what is causing a brand new battery to discharge?

I'm confused. What would hold a charge like that???

The ground cable was still connected to the battery post but the positive cable was removed; i.e., an open circuit... but when the cable touched the bare metal it sparked like the battery was still connected, and, it was not.
