And, this morning, NO problem! 700 1991

I once had a similar problem, with an Audi 5000. It turned out to be as already suggested, the filter picking up stuff in the tank which strangled the pump intake and dropped fuel pressure. When you stop, the stuff drops off the pickup screen and all works fine again. A few miles down the road, pump starts making a cavitating noise again, car falters and dies.

I tried unsuccessfully to clean the tank. Then in frustration I cut out the suction strainer from the intank pump and let the main filter catch the stuff.

End of problem. The stuff in the tank was soft and did not bother the fuel pump.

It sounds a bit daring but it worked for me.
