Personally, I look at the flame trap (the little white thing with all the holes) as cheap insurance for one specific situation. Keep in mind, the whole purpose of the flame trap is to keep flame from propagating from the intake to the crank case in the event of a backfire.
The circumstance that I ran into was a flooded engine in -30C weather, the #3 spark plug had broken so the repeated starting efforts flooded the engine and put a lot of gas into the the oil. Yes, it backfired more than once but thanks to the flame trap, the car didn't burn to the ground.
