Hi there,

You maybe could screw it up by brushing too conscientiously - but I do it anyway. Meaning, I wouldn't try to brush through the slits and rub metal on the ceramic. I'm just careful to put the never-seize grease on just the threads.

When oily and not just thin dry soot, I've baked them in a propane flame. I can always "test" it when all is back together.
