I think the OD unit can only handle a certain amount of torque, and running the multiplied torque of the lower gears through it will probably cause some damage.

I say probably, because I haven't experimented with it and don't have pictures of a grenaded OD to show. But I went ahead and put the 4th gear switch on mine. Just to idiot proof it against me somewhat.
