Hello Donald,
I've had the same failure on my 93 red sedan. At XXX,999 or even XXX,699, the odo stops. I've been able to force it back in action with a quick slap on the dash, similar to what we've come to do with a failing temperature compensation board, before a bypass.
Anyway, although the unit still seems to get stuck, albeit rarely, I disassembled the unit and placed some vaseline on the turning "paddles" and shaft in an effort to reduce frictional forces on the assembly.
Of course when you take it apart and crudely (that's the only way) advance the odo by hand, it never gets stuck, but like I said, I've had some luck, at least in reducing the times the odo got stuck with some carefully placed vaseline.
