Wiper Problems Persisting 200 1988

That loose magnet is causing the wiper motor to bind up and not rotate, despite the electrical system doing its best to dump energy into it. Get some good superglue and reattach the magnet to the housing, reassemble the motor, reconnect the whole system and see if it at least turns again.

The clunk you heard - pull the glovebox out and look underneath the dash to find the arms that connect the wipers together. Hopefully you only disconnected one of the clips... investigate and report.
