I don't think despised is the right word. More, untrusted.
Despite the reputation it has here on the Brickboard, before I came here I had never heard a single derogatory comment about the BW-35. It is what it is; old technology designed to a price point for low-power applications. It was never intended to be pressed into service for more than 50 years.
You were probably right about the low compression being responsible for the slow ascent. The transmission would have pulled with all the authority the engine could muster right up until it overheated.
