3 weeks ago an old lady with a walker sitting in her back seat make a left turn INTO my driver's side rear door; spinning me around 360 degrees! The driver's rear door took most of the impact and into the front door and rocker, breaking the weld for the mount for the rear trailing arm. The rear quarter panel is only bulged a bit and not creased. My body guy gave me two estimates. One for $2K and one for $800 to pull out the rocker and replace the two doors. Her insurance company got the 2K which is still a reasonable quote. Her car knocked my exhaust completely down (it's less than a year old); broke my two motor mounts and the driver's side rear bumper mounting bracket. I wish I had a pic of the Virgo rim she tool a 1 inch by 6 inch CHUNK out of the lip of the rim. You could see the inner edge of the tire bead. That rim held air until the next day! I temperaly re-hung the exhaustI showed the adjuster the receipts from IPD from last year for over $1400. Mechanically this car is perfect. They haven't given me a quote yet and say they are still determining culpability!
It's an '88 244GL 185K I'm the second owner and I have had her for 12 years. She was my second Volvo after my '81 244DL 4spd w/OD. rusted away. I've owned numerous other Volvos in addition to this one over the years but I've developed an attachment to her. I have modified and added numerous oem parts to her following many posts from this board and others. In my opinion I have tried to make her the apex of the 240 design incorporating all of the best features and none of the cruxes that surfaced over the years. From swapping a '90 instrument cluster for frontal service reset to '86 fresh air vent to turbo power mirrors and oem guages. BTW '88 is Jetronic 2.0, the bullet-proof year. No bad wiring harness, better sheet-metal although not as good as '93.
For some reason I can't upload pics of her but if you look in the photo gallery for: "My 2-240s" and "GT Wannabe"
I don't see too many 240s in the area anymore and most are '91 and newer base models not GL/DLs I hardly ever see an '88 244GL or even rarer '88 245GL
I'm happy to report that there are several Volvo drivers like me in my area using old bricks from Amazons to 240 as daily drivers. They sell faster than a 900 series which you can buy in nice shape needing suspension work for under a grand and the 240s either holding their value or are starting to command higher prices. The 240 is in more demand/favored around here than the 700/900.
I don't want to scrap her and I don't want a salvaged title on the car.
I could make a couple of grand on her parts and accessories.
