Thin long nose pliers or curved hemostats might help put those clips on. Here is the order of assembly:

I was just looking at the diagram; it doesn't really answer your question. The hole for the spring should be big enough to accommodate the spring but small enough to be covered by the rubber donut. If that is the case, the upholstery should not be too much of a nuisance to install the clips.
