240 auto won't shift from 2nd. to 3rd gear. desperate.

It might just be the kickdown cable. Check it for excess slack at the throttle body. If it's stuck out, feed it back in and dissconnect the cable. The transmission will function normally without it except that he'll have to move the shift lever to downshift to pass rather than just putting his foot down. That'll get him by until the cable can be cleaned/lubed to where it moves freely or the cable replaced.
