Better check the internal fuse(s) on that meter. The fuse(s) on most meters is only used for amp measurements and really easy to blow if you connect across 12V in error.
Not sure what a resistance reading would mean when you are measuring for current, in series with the battery is not a normal place to measure resistance.
You must look for current, there is always a small amount of say 150 MA or so, not enough to discharge the battery though. If it discharges overnight you will see several amps or more bleeding of. Then you can start pulling fuses.
