Brake light / Tailight problem

The brake light on my '87 740GLE (rear passenger side) is not as bright as the driver's side when the brake is applied. When the brake is applied and the headlights or the parking lights are on the brake light does not come on at all. I have no idea what is causing this problem. Your help is greatly appreciated.
