Your post brought back "fond" memories ... my first car was a French 1977 Simca 1100. The lowest part of the car was the starter motor, so naturally it collected quite a bit of road grime. When it intermittently stopped working, I used to carry a small hammer in the car, to lightly tap the starter motor to redistribue the grime/dust. When I eventually got it sorted, the motor was so full of dust that I couldn't believe it had been working at all.
