No, it works great with an otherwise totally stock motor.
If you have an old style single downpipe exhaust manifold you might not get as much added zip as you would with the later dual-downpipe manifold, though.
To swap a cam you do have to pull the head, and these days if you have the head off and you don't have hardened exhaust valve seats, you should probably get them installed.
And use new lifters.
PS: And I'd defer to Rhys above on the carb needle change.
