I bought a 60 gallon. But I use it to blow out my Sprinkler system so air capacity helps.
For basic air chisel and pull the Lug nuts off, a 23 gallon and up would be suitable. The CFM is fairly important. look for 9cfm or better. The air chisels push a lot of air , fast. Same with grinders. Many of the Sears "No-oil" compressors can't deliver this. Almost all with the Compressor Heads with the Belt to a Motor can handle this. 220V... no for the shade tree mechanic, 115 is fine.
I have the 60 gallon upright from the Home Depot. it was on sale, it is no Igersol Rand as far as the Head goes even though I think the tank is made by the same company. If I used it all day, I would probably have bought a more expensive one but I think this will last me a very long time.
