1990 740 Regina wagon

Hi All
B230f, 157,xxx miles. Rex/Regina. Intermitent crank no start. Confirmed good spark, plug against block. No smell of gas in exhaust. Confirmed very new OEM CPS, cap rotor, plugs wires, rsr, fuel pump. PO's mechanic was chasing a no fuel issue. At the connector in rear of trunk, prior to sender, I immediately noted someone had cut the Black wire on the sender side of the harness prior to the connector leaving a 1/4" stub of the black wire protruding from rear of connector....ugh. But black wire has been pulled out of the rubber sheathing 8 inches prior to the connector(sender side) and now goes back towards the wheel well and seems well grounded by a big metal screw into the body. The wire that I assume should be protruding from #4 plug of connector on engine side is completely missing. I dont even see a loose wire or stub in the harness coming over the wheel well(that shuld be going into #4engine side). Tested for Voltage at pink wire engine side, had helper turn key to kpII and got a 2 second burst of 11.9 volts as FP energized. She cranked and got 11.9 as fuel it cranked. So it seems I have voltage via pink wire. Ground(Black) seems to be where previous mechanic was trying to ground FP in unique manner? Does it matter pump is now grounded right to chassis? What else should I test while I am looking at connector?
Matt
PS I will post pix tomorrow, wife took camera tonight.
