You should have a switch coming off of the tranny to signal the reverse lights to come on. That would be the first place to look.

In the trunk of my 122 I ran a relay to catch the signal from the reverse switch and ran some H3 headlights to where the reverse bulbs used to be. I tacked them on the metal housing, after removing the old socket. For power I ran a wire off of the amp. Works really well at night through the tinted windows.
