The way this Regulator is set up is that IF the diaphragm starts to go bad the gas that gets past it runs down that small hose and into the Intake manifold.
Causing crappy gas mileage due to a Rich running engine.
Running the engine with the hose taken off the regulator But plugged and watching to see if you get any drippage out of the Regulator is a good idea that Bruce brought up.
It may be tough to see with the Fan blowing on it... maybe wrap a paper towel on the Regulator and see if it gets wet with gas.
